    What is Italicus?

Italicus Rosolio di Bergamotto is an Italian liqueur that's flavored with bergamot, a citrus fruit that's grown in Italy. If you've ever had Earl Grey tea, bergamot is the fruit used to flavor it! It has a strong flavor, with a little more bitterness than most other citrus.

    Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you'll need to have on hand:

    • Gin
    • Italicus bergamot liqueur
    • Fresh blackberries
    • Lime juice
    • Fresh mint and an extra blackberry (optional - for garnish)
Ingredients to make a Blackberry Bergamot Gin Gimlet together on a countertop.

    Substitutions

This is a pretty simple cocktail, so it's best to use the best ingredients you can! But there are definitely substitutions you can make if you are missing something.

If you don't have gin (or just don't like it), try using vodka, tequila or even a flavored vodka like citrus vodka.

For the Italicus, try using Limoncello instead. The drink will likely have a more mild and sweeter flavor.

For the lime, you can use lemon in its place, but you may need to increase the amount to 1 ounce.

If you don't have blackberries, go for raspberries instead. Or, you can try using up to ½ ounce of blackberry puree.

    Variations

Here are some variations on this recipe:

    • Sweeter version - if this cocktail is not sweet enough for you, you could use Rose's lime cordial in place of the fresh lime juice. Or, add in up to ½ ounce of blackberry syrup, or just plain simple syrup.
    • Non-alcoholic - if you're avoiding alcohol, try using a gin substitute, like Monday Zero alcohol gin. You can also replace the Italicus with Fabbri bergamot syrup.
    • Highball - instead of using a coupe glass to serve this drink, use a tall Collins glass. Serve it over ice and top it off with some seltzer. Even more refreshing!
Blackberry Bergamot gin gimlet in a coupe glass. The drink has ingredients and bar tools all around it. It is red in color and has a fresh mint sprig and fresh blackberry on a pick as a garnish.

    Equipment

You'll need some basic bar tools to make this drink. A jigger, a cocktail shaker and a strainer are musts. You'll also probably want to have a fine mesh strainer too, in order to catch any blackberry seeds.

To mash up the berries, a muddler is also great to have. If you don't have a muddler, you can just use a long fork.

For the glass, I used these pretty hand-blown coupe glasses. They hold 6 ounces each, which is a great size for this drink.

    Instructions

Start out by adding blackberries to your cocktail shaker. Mash them up with a muddler. (Don't over-mash them, or you'll get some extra bitterness in the drink from the blackberry skin.)

Hand adding fresh blackberries to a glass cocktail shaker.
Hand using a wooden muddler to smash blackberries in a cocktail shaker.

Add in the lime juice and the Italicus liqueur.

Hand pouring fresh lime juice into a cocktail shaker with blackberries in it.
Hand adding Italicus liqueur to a cocktail shaker.

Add in the gin, and then fill the cocktail shaker with ice.

Seal up the shaker, and then shake vigorously, about 15-20 hard shakes.

Hand pouring gin into a cocktail shaker.
Hands shaking up a cocktail shaker filled with a purplish red mixture.

Strain the drink into your serving glass. If you can, use a fine mesh strainer in addition to the regular strainer, so you can catch any stray blackberry seeds.

Add an extra blackberry and a sprig of fresh mint to a cocktail pick. Rest it on the rim of the glass, and serve.

Hand straining a red cocktail into a coupe glass using a regular strainer and a fine mesh strainer.
Hand adding a blackberry and mint garnish to a red cocktail.

Hint: Put your serving glass in the fridge or freezer for 15 to 30 minutes before making the drink, so it will stay extra cold!

    Equipment

    • Cocktail shaker and strainer
    • Muddler
    • Jigger or measuring cup
    • Fine mesh strainer
    • Cocktail serving glass (coupe)
    • Cocktail pick
    • Knife and cutting board
    • Citrus juicer

    Ingredients

    • 5-7 fresh blackberries
    • ¾ ounce lime juice
    • 1 ounce Italicus liqueur
    • 1½ ounces gin
    • fresh mint and an extra blackberry (optional garnish)

    Instructions

    • Add the blackberries to your cocktail shaker and use your muddler to mash them up to get the juices out.
    • Add your lime juice, Italicus liqueur and gin to the cocktail shaker.
    • Fill the shaker with ice, seal it up and give it 15-20 hard shakes.
    • Strain the drink into your cocktail glass. (I recommend double straining, where you use a fine mesh strainer in addition to the regular strainer, just to catch any blackberry seeds.)
    • Add a blackberry and some fresh mint to a cocktail pick, and rest it on the side of the glass as a garnish before serving. Cheers!

    Notes

    • If you'd like to make this cocktail sweeter, you can use a lime cordial like Rose's Lime instead of fresh lime juice. Or, just add up to ½ ounce (15 ml) of simple syrup.
    • You can easily make this drink into a highball by serving it over ice and topping it off with seltzer.
    • If you don't have fresh mint, a slice of lime makes a great garnish too.
    • If you don't have Italicus, try using Fabbri bergamot syrup.
