This recipe is pretty similar to the Cranberry Mimosa (aka Poinsettia Cocktail), just with a Halloween twist!

    What makes this Mimosa black?

I've seen a lot of cocktails use either charcoal or squid ink to make them black, but this one just uses color theory! If you mix together a dark red and blue liquid, they will make a really deep purple color that pretty much looks black.

So, I used cranberry juice and Blue Curacao liqueur to achieve the black color. It's essentially food coloring, but you don't have to add any extra to what is already in the ingredients!

    Ingredients

There are just three main ingredients in this cocktail! Since it's a mimosa, of course you need your bubbly. I used Prosecco, but you can use Champagne or Cava if you prefer.

Next, your juice. I used cranberry juice here since it's tart, and balances out the sweetness of the liqueur.

Finally, Blue Curacao liqueur brings sweetness and an orange flavor to the drink.

If you're getting fancy like me, also get some red sanding sugar to add to the rim of the glass!

    Substitutions

Need to make some swaps for the ingredients? If you don't have Prosecco or any other sparkling wine, you can sub in regular white wine instead.

For the cranberry juice, you can use pomegranate juice in its place and it will still get you to that black color. The pomegranate juice will make the final drink a little sweeter.

For the Blue Curacao, you can swap in regular triple sec. Keep in mind that you will need to add some additional blue food coloring to make the drink black if you don't use the Blue Curacao.

    Variations

You can easily make a non-alcoholic version of this drink if you get some Blue Curaçao syrup instead of the liqueur. Then, just use a sparkling grape juice or sparkling apple cider in place of the Prosecco.

If you want to make a lower in sugar version, just swap out the liqueur for a sugar free Blue Curaçao syrup!

If you're looking for an extra fun touch, try adding some black edible glitter!

    Equipment

You don't need much equipment to make this drink -- just your cocktail glass (the spookier the better!) and a jigger or small measuring cup. If you're doing the red sugar rim, you'll also need a couple of small dishes.

I used one of these skeleton hand cocktail glasses that looks even cooler in person!

    Instructions

First, add the red sugar to a small dish to make the sugared rim. I dipped the glass rim in some cranberry juice first, but you could also use simple syrup, water or a cut lemon to wet the rim all around.

Once it's wet, dip it in to the red sugar so it sticks all around the edge.

Once the rim is ready, add in your cranberry juice.

    Then, add in the Prosecco.

Hand pouring cranberry juice into a champagne flute.
Hand pouring prosecco into a champagne flute that has cranberry juice in it, so the liquid looks red in color.

Finally, carefully pour in the Blue Curaçao liqueur. It will mix together with the red liquid and turn the drink black.

    Serve and enjoy!

Hint: Since you're not using ice, make sure all of your ingredients are chilled beforehand!

    Top tip

If you're thinking of making these for a party, you may want to making them one at a time for your guests rather than mixing up a big batch. They are super quick to make and it's pretty fun watching the drink turn black when you put in the liqueur!

    Equipment

    • Jigger or measuring cup
    • Champagne flute
    • Small dishes (for the red sugar rim)
    • Champagne bottle opener (optional)

    Ingredients

    Red Sugar Rim

    • 2 tablespoon red sugar
    • 2 tablespoon cranberry juice (or use water or liqueur)

    Cocktail

    • 1 ounce cranberry juice (chilled)
    • 4 ounces Prosecco (chilled)
    • ½ ounce Blue Curaçao (chilled if possible)

    Instructions

    • Add the red sugar to a small dish, and add the 2 tablespoon cranberry juice to another dish.
    • Wet the rim of the cocktail glass in the juice, and then dip it into the sugar so that the sugar sticks to the rim.
    • Measure and pour the 1 ounce of cranberry juice into the glass.
    • Add in the Prosecco.
    • Add in the Blue Curacao liqueur.
    • Serve and enjoy!

    Notes

    • You can use pomegranate juice instead of cranberry juice if you want a sweeter cocktail.
    • Tip: be sure to add in the liqueur last so it won't settle on the bottom of the glass.
