I loved creating this Maple Caramel White Russian because it's such an indulgent, creamy cocktail! It's an easy fall flavor twist on the classic White Russian, a vodka cocktail with coffee liqueur and cream. Adding the warm flavors of caramel and maple makes it even more decadent and delicious!

What is a White Russian?
The White Russian is a layered cocktail with vodka and coffee liqueur on the bottom, and heavy cream on the top. It was cemented in popular culture by the movie The Big Lebowski as the main drink of the effortlessly cool main character, The Dude.
Its older cousin, the Black Russian, is basically the same drink without the cream! It was first made in the 1960s, created by bartender Gustave Tops at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels.
If you're wondering about the name, it just comes from the base spirit of vodka. Other than that, it's not Russian at all!
Ingredients
For this Maple Caramel White Russian, you'll need to have vodka, cream and coffee liqueur. I used Kahlua coffee liqueur, but Mr Black cold brew liqueur or Cantera Negra Cafe also work great.
You'll also need some maple syrup, and caramel sauce. I used Torani puremade caramel, but you can use your favorite, or even use dulce de leche. (If you use a thicker sauce, you will get less drips.)
If you can get some pure maple sugar, I definitely recommend using it to add to the caramel sauce on the glass rim! If not, you can use brown sugar instead.
Substitutions and Variations
If you don't have the caramel sauce, but want to keep the caramel flavor, you can substitute in a caramel flavored vodka like Van Gogh caramel vodka in place of the plain vodka.
If you want to make this into a mocktail, it is pretty easy! You can just sub in cooled coffee in place of the vodka and coffee liqueur. Cold brew concentrate would work really well here too. If you need to adjust it, add in a little more maple syrup to increase the sweetness.
Equipment
You'll need a couple of key things to make this drink. First, you'll need a jigger to measure out your ingredients. You'll also need a bar spoon, and a serving glass (I used an old fashioned glass).
If you want to do the caramel rim and drizzle inside the glass, you'll also need a separate mixing glass for the bottom layer of the drink. Otherwise, you can just mix that part in the glass itself.
You'll also need to have two small dishes to make it easy to add the caramel and maple sugar to the glass rim.
Instructions
Start out by preparing your glass! Add the caramel sauce and maple sugar each to a small dish. Then dip the glass rim in the caramel, and then in the maple sugar to coat the rim.
Keep in mind it will drip down the sides of the glass, so you might want to get some napkins!
Next, drizzle some more of the caramel sauce into the inside of the serving glass. Set the glass aside while you make the bottom layer of the drink.
Add the vodka, coffee liqueur and maple syrup to a separate glass.
Mix them together using a bar spoon, and then fill your prepared serving glass with ice.
Pour the vodka mixture into the serving glass. Then, measure out your cream and carefully pour it into the drink. It will make a white layer on top.
Gently stir the drink just a couple of times so the two layers come together a little bit, and then serve!
Hint: Try to chill all of your ingredients beforehand, including the glass! Note that if you chill the caramel, it won't drip as much. Mine was room temperature, so if you like the drippy look, keep it at room temp.
Top tip
This is a delicious drink to make for a crowd, and you can pre-mix the bottom layer with the vodka, coffee liqueur and maple syrup! You can also add the caramel to the rim beforehand.
Keep the vodka mixture in a pitcher in the fridge until you're ready. When you want to serve, add the ice, pour in the vodka mixture and then the cream. Serve and enjoy!

Maple Caramel White Russian
Equipment
- Small dishes (to add the caramel to the glass rim - optional)
Ingredients
Caramel Glass Rim (optional)
- 2 tablespoon caramel sauce
- 2 tablespoon maple sugar
- drizzle caramel sauce (inside the glass)
Cocktail
- 2 ounces vodka (or caramel flavored vodka)
- ½ ounce Kahlua (or your favorite coffee liqueur)
- ½ ounce maple syrup
- 1 ounce heavy cream (or half and half)
Instructions
Preparing the glass (optional)
- Add the caramel sauce and maple sugar each to a small dish.
- Dip the glass rim into the caramel sauce. Then, dip it into the maple sugar so that the sugar sticks to the sauce.
- Drizzle more caramel sauce into the inside of the glass. Set it aside while you make the drink.
Cocktail
- Add the vodka, kahlua and maple syrup to a mixing glass and stir it so the maple syrup dissolves.
- Add ice to your cocktail serving glass and then pour the mixture into the glass.
- Carefully pour the heavy cream on top so that it makes a top layer.
- Stir the drink gently so that the cream mixes in just a little bit with the bottom cocktail, and serve!
Notes
- Using half and half instead of heavy cream will reduce the calories by about 60.
- Depending on which caramel sauce you use, it may drip down the sides of the glass rim, so keep in mind that it might get a little messy! If you want it to be less drippy, you can refrigerate the caramel sauce, or use a thicker sauce like dulce de leche.
