The Coffee Negroni is my new favorite Negroni riff! It has all of the flavor of the classic drink, but the addition of coffee liqueur gives it even more complexity and depth. It's easy to make and great for coffee lovers!

This drink is great for any season, but I think it's especially good in the fall months! Negronis are definitely on the boozy side, and this is no exception.

Looking for some more Negroni variations? First, definitely check out the classic Negroni recipe!

Then try out a fizzy Negroni Sbagliato, a White Negroni (which, oddly, is yellow), or a summery Negroni Spritz. The Aperol Negroni is a lightened up version too!

Why coffee works in a Negroni

The Negroni is a famous Italian cocktail from the early 1900's, mixing gin with Campari and sweet vermouth. It has a lot of bitter flavors, but they are well balanced with sweetness and the strength of the gin.

Coffee liqueur works so well in this drink because it has its own bitter flavors, plus sweetness too, so it all balances out perfectly! The citrus flavors of the Campari mellow out the coffee a little bit and the result is just so tasty.

    Ingredients

This drink only has four main ingredients, so it's simple to put together!

You'll need some sweet vermouth -- Carpano Antica Formula Sweet Vermouth is my go-to -- as well as Campari aperitivo liqueur.

Also, get some gin, as well as a bottle of coffee liqueur. I used Mr Black cold brew liqueur, but you can use Kahlua coffee liqueur (it is a little sweeter and less bitter than Mr Black).

For the garnish, I used a dehydrated orange slice. You could also use a piece of fresh orange peel if you have it.

    Substitutions

A great substitute in this drink is to use tequila in place of the gin. They're both delicious and I suggest trying it both ways to see what you prefer!

For the vermouth, if you don't have it, you can just increase either the Campari or the coffee liqueur (whichever you like better).

If you don't have Campari, increase the vermouth and add some orange bitters if you have them.

For the coffee liqueur, if you don't have it, you can try adding in cooled brewed coffee or espresso.

    Variations

If you want to make this drink sweeter, try reducing the amount of gin you use and add more of either the vermouth or the coffee liqueur.

To make it less sweet, reduce the vermouth and add more gin.

If you want to reduce the alcohol content, you can try using alcohol substitutes. Monday Zero Alcohol gin is my favorite gin sub, and you can use Lyre's Italian Orange and Lyre's Aperitif Rosso in place of the Campari and vermouth. For the coffee liqueur, try using a coffee syrup instead.

    Equipment

This drink is best served when it's stirred with ice and then strained onto fresh ice, so you'll need a jigger, a cocktail mixing glass and a long bar spoon.

If you don't have a mixing glass, you can stir it in the glass instead and serve it like that. It might just get a little watered down if you wait too long to drink it!

An old fashioned style cocktail glass is perfect for this drink.

Also, try out this clear ice sphere maker if you want to make large ice cubes. They are perfect for this drink because they keep it cold without melting too quickly!

Note: if you're checking out new bar equipment, definitely look into A Bar Above! You can get 10% off of anything on their site using my discount code, LKDrinks. Their bar tools are really durable, and also can be thrown in the dishwasher when you're done mixing!

    Instructions

Add in the vermouth and Campari to the mixing glass.

Hand pouring vermouth into a cocktail mixing glass.
Hand pouring campari liqueur into a mixing glass.

Add in the coffee liqueur and the gin.

Hand pouring coffee liqueur into a mixing glass.
Hand pouring gin into a mixing glass.

Fill the mixing glass with ice, and stir well, for about 30 seconds.

Hand adding ice to a cocktail mixing glass filled with brown liquid.
Hand stirring a cocktail in a mixing glass.

Add ice to your serving glass (preferably one large ice cube). Strain the drink into the glass.

    Add your garnish, and serve!

Hand straining a brown colored cocktail into a cocktail glass that has a large sphere of ice in it.
Hand adding a dried orange slice to a brown cocktail.

Hint: If you're using a large sphere of clear ice like I did, make sure to take it out of the freezer 5 to 10 minutes before you want to use it. This will give it a chance to warm up and "temper" so that it won't crack when the cocktail is poured onto it.

    Top tip

This cocktail is perfect for making ahead in a big batch! You can make it well in advance, and keep it in an airtight glass container. Since it has vermouth, you can keep it in the fridge for up to a month.
