What is a rum punch?
Rum punch is a fruity rum drink traditionally made with rum, fruit juices, and syrups. There are tons of different punch recipes, dating way back to the 1700s when sailors would mix Caribbean rum with fruit juices.
There are so many possibilities when it comes to punch, that people in the Caribbean started a rhyme to remember the best proportions of a punch recipe. It goes: "One of sour, two of sweet, three of strong, four of weak." (Strong is the liquor, and weak is typically water or seltzer.) If you follow those ratios, you'll get a perfect punch every time!
Ingredients
There are several different ingredients to have on hand for this rum punch. Of course, you'll need some rum! I used both white rum and pineapple rum, but you can omit the pineapple rum if you don't have it.
I also used Limoncello liqueur to add flavor, sweetness and a little extra liquor.
For the fruit juice, both lime and pineapple juice work perfectly together.
Passion fruit syrup, Elemakule Tiki bitters, and seltzer finish off the ingredients.
Substitutions
Don't have some of the ingredients? Here are some easy swaps you can make!
For the rum, you can definitely use dark rum instead of white. Or, try a different spirit, like bourbon, vodka or even tequila.
If you don't have Limoncello, you can use Triple Sec instead.
For the Elemakule Tiki bitters, sub in Angostura bitters instead. Or, ginger bitters would work well too.
You can also try using elderflower syrup in place of the passion fruit syrup.
Variations
If you want to make tweaks to this drink, here are some fresh ideas!
Try adding a berry syrup, like blackberry, instead of the passion fruit syrup. This will bring a jammy flavor and give the drink a reddish color too.
Want to add a little color to the top? Try adding a float of butterfly pea-infused liquor. (Use a clear liquor, like white rum or vodka, as the base.)
Equipment
You'll need a cocktail shaker, strainer, and jigger to mix up this drink. You'll also need a serving glass. Any glass of about 12-15 ounces capacity will work great! I've used a Tiki style glass that's traditionally used for the Pearl Diver cocktail.
A cutting board and knife are useful if you're using fresh lime juice, and for the lime garnish. I also used a cocktail pick to help hold the lime garnish in a curled up shape, but that's optional.

Instructions
Start out by cutting a lime slice for your garnish. I cut a slit in the lime slice and curled it around, pinning it in place with a cocktail pick. Set the garnish aside while you make the drink.
For the drink itself, start by adding lime juice to the cocktail shaker.
Then, add in the passion fruit syrup and the pineapple juice.
Next, add in the Limoncello and the rum.
Finally, add a dash of the Tiki bitters. Then, fill the shaker with ice.
Seal up the shaker and give it about 15-20 vigorous shakes. This will both chill and dilute the drink (by the ice melting a bit).
Then, strain the drink into your serving glass over fresh ice cubes.
Top it off with the seltzer, and then add in the lime slice garnish.
Hint: Try adding a float of dark rum for an extra kick!
Top tip
Like any good punch recipe, this makes a great batch cocktail! A simple trick to make 8 portions of this drink is to use a cup measurement instead of ounces. (So change 1 ounce to 1 cup, and so on.)
Mix everything in a pitcher up to an hour before the start of your party, and keep in the fridge. Of course, if you want to keep some of the carbonation, just leave out the seltzer until the very end and pour it on top. Cheers!
