I love a good tropical drink, and this Tropical Whiskey Punch is no exception! Rye whiskey, pineapple and passion fruit make such a good flavor combo. This is the perfect easy summer drink for any whiskey lover!

Why use whiskey in a tropical drink?

I love using whiskey in tropical drinks because it gives a little bit of an unexpected flavor! Although rum is king for most Tiki style drinks, whiskey is a great alternative.

The rye whiskey in this drink brings a little more of a sharp, grassy flavor than either a blended whiskey or a bourbon. You can substitute each spirit and see what you like best!

    Ingredients

To make this drink, you'll need:

    • Rye whiskey
    • Passion fruit syrup (I used Small Hand foods passion fruit syrup)
    • Pineapple juice
    • Aperol (Aperol liqueur)
    • Lemon juice
    • Seltzer

For an easy and pretty garnish, I used one of these dried pineapple slices. A slice of fresh lemon works well too!

Ingredients to make a Tropical Whiskey Punch together on a countertop.

    Substitutions

Missing an ingredient? Here are some substitution ideas!

For the whiskey, of course you can use dark rum instead. Or, try out an aged brandy like Armagnac.

If you don't have Aperol, try using Campari. Or, try a different amaro liqueur like Meletti or Averna.

Instead of passion fruit syrup, you can use fresh passionfruit along with some simple syrup. Or, try out a different flavor, like mango nectar.

    Variations

Here are some variations and adjustments you can make to this cocktail:

    • More sweet - increase the amount of passion fruit syrup you use, or switch out the seltzer to a sweetened lemon-lime soda.
    • Less sweet - add in a little more lemon juice until you're happy with the flavor. Or, try adding in some bitters, like Elemakule Tiki bitters.
    • Non-alcoholic version - if you're avoiding alcohol, you can easily substitute in a non-alcoholic whiskey, and an Aperol substitute. My favorite here are Lyre's American Malt and Lyre's Italian Spritz.
    • Different fruits - try using some different fruits if you prefer different flavors. Some that work really well together are orange juice with elderflower syrup, or mango juice with raspberry syrup.

    Equipment

For equipment, a basic bar tool set that has a shaker, strainer and jigger is always good to have. (My favorite set is from A Bar Above, and you can get 10% with my discount code, LKDrinks!)

If you're using fresh citrus, a knife, cutting board and citrus juicer will come in handy.

For the serving glass, I used this Hurricane style glass from Viski that I love.

    Instructions

Start out by adding in your ingredients to the cocktail shaker. I usually add ingredients in based on how expensive they are (so you don't have to worry about wasting things if you mess up!)

So, start by adding the lemon juice and pineapple juice.

Hand pouring lemon juice into a cocktail shaker.

Then, add in the passion fruit syrup and the Aperol liqueur.

Last, add in the whiskey. Then, fill the shaker with ice.

Hand pouring whiskey into a cocktail shaker with orange liquid in it.
Hand adding ice to a cocktail shaker filled with orange liquid.

Seal up the shaker, and give it about 15-20 hard shakes to chill and dilute the drink.

Add fresh ice to your cocktail glass, and strain the drink into the glass.

Hands shaking a cocktail shaker with orange liquid inside.
Hand using a cocktail shaker and strainer to pour liquid into an ice-filled hurricane glass.

Top it off with seltzer, and then add any garnishes you want to use. I used a dried pineapple slice here.

    Then, just serve and enjoy!

Hand pouring seltzer into an orange-colored cocktail in a hurricane glass.
Hand adding a dried pineapple slice to a cocktail in a hurricane glass.

Hint: To keep your ice from melting down too fast, try to refrigerate all of your ingredients before mixing up the drink. (And you can chill the glass too!)

    Top tip

It's easy to make this drink in a punch bowl style! You can just use cups for all of the measurements instead of ounces.

Instead of shaking the ingredients with ice, mix everything except the seltzer and chill it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

You can either add the seltzer in before setting out the bowl, or add the seltzer to top off each glass. Cheers!
