The Malagoli Whiskey Sour is one of my family's best not-so-secret drink recipes! My grandma, Dora, came up with this recipe, and since then these frozen whiskey sours have been a family tradition. They're easy and fun to make, and perfect for parties. I may be biased, but it'll always be one of my favorite drinks!

These frozen whiskey sours are super refreshing and great for summer sipping! But, there's really no rule book here. You can enjoy them any time of year, and they are actually great as a Christmas Eve drink too!

Looking for more refreshing whiskey drinks? Try out this tropical punch with whiskey, this Bourbon Smash with fresh raspberries and peaches, or this tasty whiskey sour with pineapple.

If you want some more tasty summer drinks, give the Mermaid Water rum cocktail a try! Or, the delicious White Linen cocktail with elderflower liqueur is always a hit!

    Ingredients

There are three main ingredients in the Malagoli Whiskey Sour: whiskey, orange juice and frozen lemonade concentrate.

An optional addition is half a ripe banana. This is a great way to give the drink a little more sweetness and body. Don't worry -- the banana won't take over the flavor!

Just note that if you're using the banana, it needs to be ripe, with lots of brown spots like in the photo below.

For the lemonade, use either regular lemonade concentrate or pink lemonade. Both work great!

For the whiskey, go for a blended whiskey like Seagram's 7.

You can also add a cherry on top for an optional garnish! I like using Luxardo cherries or Tillen Farms Bada Bing cherries.

    What is frozen lemonade concentrate?

The secret ingredient to this drink that makes it super easy is the frozen lemonade concentrate. You can buy this at most grocery stores.

It's basically a really thick syrup, made with real lemon juice and sugar, and kept frozen so that the lemon juice keeps its fresh tanginess.

If you don't like the idea of using premade concentrate, try out this lemonade concentrate recipe to make your own!

    Substitutions

For the frozen lemonade concentrate, you can use lemon juice and sugar instead. Just add ½ cup lemon juice and ½ cup sugar (118 ml lemon juice and 100 g sugar) to the blender and blend on low until the sugar is dissolved.

If you don't have whiskey, you can use a dark rum or aged brandy.

    Variations

If you want to make some different versions of this recipe, here are some things to try out!

Want to make a less sweet version? Just use a little less of the lemonade and add more ice.

For a raspberry version, use about 4 to 6 ounces of fresh raspberries instead of the banana.

To make a non-alcoholic version, you can use a whiskey substitute, like Lyre's American Malt. Or, try using a very strong black tea instead.

    Equipment

The main thing you'll need for this recipe is a blender!

For one batch of 4 cocktails, you'll need a blender that holds at least 6 cups (48 ounces/1.4 liters). This Oster blender is my favorite and holds exactly one batch.

For the serving glasses, I used Hurricane glasses, but you can use anything from a wine glass to a tumbler. Keep in mind each drink will be around 9½ ounces.

    Instructions

Start out by adding the frozen lemonade concentrate and the orange juice to your blender.

Add in the banana if you are using it.

Hand pouring frozen lemonade concentrate into a blender.
Hand pouring orange juice into a blender.

Then, add in the whiskey, and then the ice.

Hand using an ice scoop to add ice to a blender filled with yellow liquid.

Seal up the blender. Then run the blender on smoothie mode if you have that on your machine.

If you don't have smoothie mode, then start by doing a bunch of short pulses to break up the ice. Then, run it continuously for about a minute or two until the drink is smooth.

Hand about to start a blender on smoothie mode.
Blender blending up a batch of frozen whiskey sours.

Pour the drink into your serving glasses. Optionally, add a cocktail cherry to a pick, and rest it on top of the glass.

    Serve and enjoy!

Hint: The drink might separate a bit as the ice floats to the top. If you want it to separate a little less quickly, add about ½ teaspoon of xanthan gum to the blender.

    Top tip

You can easily double this recipe if your blender is big enough! You'll need a blender with at least 12 cups capacity (~2.8 liters).

When you are making a double batch, you can use the 12-ounce container of frozen lemonade as a measuring cup for even less dishes to wash! Just use 1 container of the lemonade, 1 container of orange juice, and 1½ containers of the whiskey.
