    What is a smash cocktail?

A smash is a type of cocktail that uses fresh fruit, fresh herbs and seasonal ingredients. It's a really fun drink to make because you use a muddler to smash up the fruit!

Smashes are usually served over ice and are definitely on the refreshing side. Give these other delicious smash recipes a try: the Pineapple Whiskey Smash, or the Raspberry Peach Bourbon Smash.

    Ingredients

To make this drink, I used a non-alcoholic gin. My favorite is Monday Zero Alcohol Gin, but Lyre's Dry London spirit is another good one to try.

For the fruit, you'll need some ripe strawberries and fresh lemon.

You'll also need some grenadine syrup and seltzer (I used lime seltzer, but lemon or grapefruit seltzer also work really well).

    Variations

If you want to make this drink into a cocktail, you can just use real gin! Or, if you want to keep it a mocktail but don't have the non-alcoholic gin, just use more seltzer or some juniper syrup.

For some additional flavor, try adding some fresh mint leaves, fresh rosemary, or fresh sage into the glass when you are muddling the fruit.

You can also try using some ginger beer or grapefruit soda in place of the seltzer.

    Equipment

To make this drink, you'll need a few basic bar tools like a shaker, strainer, bar spoon, and a jigger to measure the liquids.

Since you'll need to smash up the fruit, you'll also want to have a muddler.

For the serving glass, I used these ribbed glasses with short stems. Any highball glass will work great here too.

    Instructions

Start out by adding your cut up lemon and strawberries to a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to smash up the fruit until you've gotten out as much juice as possible.

Then, add in your grenadine syrup.

Hand using a muddler tool to smash up the lemon and strawberry pieces in a cocktail shaker.
Hand pouring grenadine syrup into a cocktail shaker.

Add in the non-alcoholic gin, and then fill your cocktail shaker with ice.

Hand adding ice to a cocktail shaker filled with red liquid.

Seal up your shaker and give everything a good shake, for about 15 seconds.

Then add fresh ice to your cocktail serving glass.

Hands shaking up a gold and glass cocktail shaker.
Hand adding ice to a drink serving glass.

Strain your drink into the serving glass, and then top it off with your seltzer.

Hand straining red liquid from a cocktail strainer into a fancy glass filled with ice.
Hand pouring seltzer on top of a red colored drink.

Give the drink a gentle stir just to combine.

If you want to use a garnish, add a lemon slice and a fresh strawberry to a cocktail pick. I kind of wrapped the lemon slice around the strawberry so it's like a mini fruit taco!

Rest the garnish on top of the drink, serve, and enjoy!

Hand using a long bar spoon to stir a red drink in a fancy glass.
Hand adding a strawberry and lemon slice to a cocktail pick while a red colored cocktail sits on the countertop.

Hint: If you aren't getting enough juice out of your fruit, try getting your fruit to room temperature before smashing it up! You can let it sit out for a while, or microwave it for a few seconds.

    Equipment

    • Cocktail shaker and strainer
    • Muddler
    • Jigger or measuring cup
    • Knife and cutting board
    • Cocktail serving glass (Stemmed Highball) (or a regular highball glass)
    • Cocktail pick (optional)

    Ingredients

    Mocktail

    • 3 strawberries
    • ½ lemon
    • ¾ ounce grenadine syrup
    • 2 ounces non-alcoholic gin
    • 2 ounces lime seltzer

    Garnish (optional)

    • 1 strawberry
    • 1 lemon slice

    Instructions

    • Cut up your strawberries and half of a lemon into pieces and add them to your cocktail shaker.
    • Use your muddler to smash them up really well, until the as much juice as possible comes out of the fruit.
    • Add in the grenadine and the non-alcoholic gin.
    • Fill the shaker with ice and shake everything well, about 15-20 times.
    • Add ice to your serving glass and strain the drink into your glass.
    • Top off the drink with the lime seltzer.
    • If you are making the garnish, use your cocktail pick to skewer the lemon slice and strawberry. (I wrapped my lemon slice around the whole strawberry kind of like a mini taco.)
    • Optionally add the garnish to the top of the drink, and serve!
